Exhibition Overview & Program Notes

Featuring Mysore and Tanjore art style of paintings by Lalita Kalpavilai ### **CURATORIAL DISPATCH | EXHIBITION MONOGRAPH** **Exhibition:** *Nāda-Rūpa: The Embodied Sacred in Thanjavur and Mysore Classical Art* **Auspices:** Lalita Kapilavai Heritage Studio **Location:** Madison Avenue, New York City **Featured Master Artist:** Smt. Lalita Kapilavai --- ### **Curatorial Essay: The Confluence of Śilpa and Nāda** In the classical traditions of South India, sacred iconography (*Citra-sūtra*) and classical music (*Gāndharva-veda*) are not disparate disciplines, but twin expressions of the same metaphysical substrate—*Nāda-Brahman*. The forthcoming exposition at the Lalita Kapilavai Heritage Studio presents a rigorous visual and contemplative corpus of classical Thanjavur and Mysore sacred paintings, conceived and executed by the venerated master artist and Carnatic vocalist, Smt. Lalita Kapilavai. This collection bridges the canonical iconometry of the *Śilpa Śāstras* with the sublime emotive interiority (*bhāva*) of Carnatic music, translating the meditative invocations of the *Sangeeta Trimūrti*—Muthuswami Dikshitar, Tyagaraja, and Syama Sastri—into luminous visual theology. --- ### **The Material Alchemy of the Thanjavur Tradition** The Thanjavur works on display adhere strictly to centuries-old Agamic protocols and orthodox material preparation: * **Iconometric Precision (*Tālamāna*):** Every deity is delineated according to the canonical *daśa-tāla* and *nava-tāla* systems of proportion, ensuring the visual form commands *sātvika* presence and ritual balance (*pratimā-lakṣaṇa*). * **The Gesso Substrate (*Makku*):** The characteristic high-relief ornamentation is built using a traditional paste of unboiled limestone (*sukka-kallu*) emulsified with cold-pressed tamarind seed binder (*chincha-bīja*). This creates a durable, archival foundation impervious to climatic stress. * **Embossed Gilding (*Svarṇa-patra*):** Masterfully pressed over the sculptural gesso reliefs is pure 22-carat Jaipur gold leaf, hand-burnished to achieve the deep, warm luster characteristic of the Maratha-period royal ateliers. * **Ornamentation & Encasement:** The compositions are studded with calibrated unheated semi-precious gemstones and framed in seasoned, traditionally joined Chettinad and Burma teakwood, preserving the sacred integrity of the sanctum panel (*Citrābhāsa*). --- ### **The Subtle Elegance of Mysore Citra-kalā** Contrasting the monumental, gem-encrusted relief of the Thanjavur tradition, the Mysore fine art exhibited reflects the refined aesthetic of the late Vijayanagara and Wodeyar courtly styles: * **Low-Relief Gesso (*Gesso Paste*):** Rendered with a delicate, low-profile formulation of purified zinc oxide and *gum arabica*, yielding whisper-soft sculptural contours. * **Lyrical Linework & *Bhāva*:** Executed with brushstrokes that mirror the delicate *microtonal oscillations (gamakas)* of Carnatic *ragas* such as *Kambhoji* and *Bhairavi*. * **Ocular Expression (*Nayana-dīkṣā*):** Special emphasis is placed on the *kāruṇya-rasa* (compassionate gaze) of the deities, imbued with the inward contemplative stillness taught by the Haridasa tradition of Purandara Dasa. --- ### **Curatorial Note on the Artist** Smt. Lalita Kapilavai occupies a rare and vital continuum in contemporary classical arts. As an accomplished Carnatic classical vocalist, her visual stroke is inextricably informed by the sonorous architecture of the *kriti*. Her visualizations of the Devi and the Trimūrti serve as visual commentaries on Dikshitar’s *Kamalamba Navavarna* and Tyagaraja’s *Divyanama Sankeertanas*. This exhibition invites connoisseurs, scholars, and devotees to witness the sacred synthesis of classical Indian fine art—where every line is a *tāla*, every tone a *raga*, and every gilded relief an enduring act of *upāsanā*. --- **Inquiries & Curatorial Archive:** Lalita Kapilavai Digital Archive & Sanctum *Lalita Kapilavai Heritage Studio, Madison Avenue, New York*
